Our History

With each community strengthening its fire protection due to the growing trend of suburban dwellers, several Paintertown residents realized the need for a fire department of their own.

Paintertown Volunteer Fire Company was originally known as the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company of Paintertown. It was formed on September 28, 1942 and changed to the Paintertown Volunteer Fire Company in 1944. In the early years of formation there were approximately seven men holding meetings in the Paintertown School house and later in the home of Walter Geiger. Then, land was given to them on Tray Road where the company sits today.

The first officers within the organization were Harlod Schendal (president), William Geiger (vice-president), Dan Geiger (secretary), and Robert Kuhns (treasurer). Other officers were Frank Kuhns (chief), George Geiger (assistant chief), Robert Hobaugh (captain), Charles Guy (first lieutenant), Richard Woomer (second lieutenant), and Melvin Shaner (hose foreman). By-laws were drawn up by William Geiger, Walter Rain, and Harold Schendal.

As for firefighting apparatus, Paintertown's first piece of equipment was a soda-acid tank on wheels, which the company still has. Then came a brown pickup to haul hose and equipment. The first regular fire truck was a 1951 Ford and was soon followed by a 1950 Ford. In 1970 a 1970 American LaFrance Engine was purchased to replace the 1950 Ford. In 1976, a '76 Ford brush truck was purchased and is still in use today. In 1981, a 1957 open cab American LaFrance was purchased from the Irwin Volunteer Fire Company to replace the '51 Ford. In 1986, a GMC engine was bought from E-One to replace the '57 LaFrance. In 1993, a 1980 Hendrickson Engine was bought from the Baden Volunteer Fire Company in Brandywine, Maryland and replaced the '70 LaFrance. In 1997, the '86 GMC was refurbished to a 1997 Custom Cab E-One Engine with1000 gallon water capacity. In 2001, due to the growth of the community in the Paintertown Volunteer Fire Company's response area, a 2001 Seagrave 75 foot mean stick Quint Ladder truck was purchased. In 2004, a 2004 GMC pickup squad truck was added.

The Paintertown Volunteer Fire Company's purpose is to render protection of property from fire and other hazards, to protect the lives and safety of the citizens of the community, and to render first aid to the injured in the case of emergencies or public disasters.

The Paintertown Volunteer Fire Company's response area is the Village of Paintertown, Sunrise Estates, Penn Towne, the Willows, the Irwin Country Club-Bakerschool Road area and Route 130 from Bakerschool Road to the turnpike bridge. Paintertown VFC also gives mutual aid to of Penn Township and the surrounding areas.
